Three Steps to IndyCar

Similar to Major League Baseball (MLB), open-wheel racing has a ladder system, and while there are far fewer participants per level in auto racing, the progression is similar.

The BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda is the equivalent of MLB's Class A. Cost of entry is estimated to be $60,000. In 2009, half the entrants in the series are US residents and the other half come from around the world. Use the links to the left to view pictures, video, and information from each series stop - 7 states, 14 races.

Class AA is the Star Mazda Championship.  Cost of entry is estimated to be $350,000. The series is sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) and currently appears with the prestigious American LeMans Series as well as with the NASCAR Nationwide Series, ARCA and Grand Am. This series features its own points and prize schedule and the series is cablecast nationally in prime time on the Speed Channel Network.

The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda is similar to Class AAA. 2009 marks the 36th season of competition of North America's longest-running open wheel driver development series.  The series is sanctioned by IMSA and features 23 drivers from around the world.  It is renowned as a launching pad for drivers desiring to compete in IndyCar and Formula1.
